Socialtest Quickstart

Socialtest allows you to easily create A/B tests to discover the videos which work best on your Facebook page. 

Getting Started

When you first add the Socialtest app to a Hootsuite stream, you will be prompted to authenticate on Facebook:

Clicking the Login with Facebook button will open a new tab on Facebook where you can give Socialtest permission to access your Facebook account and its associated pages. Once you have authenticated, you will be prompted to create your first A/B test:

Clicking the Create A/B test button will display the test creation popup:

Creating your first test

On the first screen of the test creation popup, select the name of the Facebook page you want to upload the video to, select the Type (currently on VIDEO), and then enter a Name and Description for the test. Next, click the Upload test video button to select and upload your video.

Video specifications

You can upload MP4 and MOV (Quicktime) videos to Socialtest. The videos must be a minimum of 3 seconds in length, and can be no larger than 1 gigabyte in size. 

Next steps

With your video uploaded, and everything filled in on the first page, click the Next button to advance to the next page to create variants, and configure additional settings:

Test Settings

First, select the Optimization Goal for your test. Optimization goals let you decide the criteria used to select the best variant of your video. Options include:

  • Average time watched
  • Unique Impressions
  • Link clicks
  • Comments
  • Shares
  • Impressions
  • Reactions
  • Video views (over 60s)

Test Duration allows you to decide how long to run your test. For pages with a smaller number of subscribers, it may be beneficial to select a longer test period, as with a shorter period of time you may not be able to get enough data to determine a winner of the test. You can select from durations of 3 minutes up to 7 days. 

Clicking the Start field will display a calendar from which you can select the date and time you would like to start the test at:

The Control Variant option allows you to select which variant of your video to select in the event that there is no clear winner for your test, i.e. a tie. 

Creating Variants

You can create up to four different variants for your video. Variants consist of a thumbnail, title and description. Clicking Click to edit will display a popup where you can enter information for each variant:

Once you are finished with setting up your test, click the Save A/B test button in the bottom right of the popup. Your video will be uploaded to Facebook, and the test created.

NOTE: if your video is very large, it may take a few minutes to upload the video to Facebook while saving your test. 

Once you have saved your test, it will be displayed in your Hootsuite stream:

If you hover over a test which is either scheduled or currently running, an will be displayed in the top right corner:

Clicking the will cancel/delete the test. Also, if you click anywhere else on the test, more detailed information will be displayed for the test:

Additional app options

Clicking the icon will allow you to select filter and sorting options for your tests:

Clicking the  icon will display the A/B test creation popup. 

Clicking the  icon will display a dropdown menu where you can delete your Facebook token/authorization, as well as find links for help/support, and, your Hootsuite User ID:

Clicking the  icon will display Socialtest news and update information.
